Friday’s escalation of tariffs imposed by China and the United States on each other, and President Donald Trump tweeting “We don’t need China”, has raised questions whether the two powers even want to – let alone can – find an off-ramp in an accelerating struggle for global ascendancy.

Trade is just part of the struggle.
